About the Broome County Historical Society

Since 1919, the Broome County Historical Society has been collecting, preserving and interpreting the history of our area.  The Historical Society houses its three dimensional collections at Roberson Museum and Science Center and archival items at the Local History & Genealogy Center at the Broome County Public Library.

The generosity of our membership has helped the Society engage in these areas:

PROGRAMS

We publish two issues of our newsletter, Broome County History Bulletin, each year.

COLLECTIONS
The Society maintains a collection of over 150,000 items covering our area from pre-history to the present.  We have preserved these items by using current museum and archival standards.

LIBRARY
The BCHS is a major participant in the Local History & Genealogy Center in the Broome County Public Library.  A collection of books, manuscripts, photographic images, newspaper clippings, obituaries and an index of names are maintained in the Local History & Genealogy Center.

RESEARCH
We provide a research service using only materials located in the Local History & Genealogy Center.

  • The cost for research is $10.00/hour, plus the cost of copies (.25).
  • All monies must be paid before the research can be started.

MEMBERSHIP
Members of the Broome County Historical Society receive 10% off any BCHS publication. Members also pay half the cost of research ($5.00/hour instead of $10.00/hour).
